ABSTRACT

A chromatographic method (high performance liquid chromatography) with a diode array detector was developed for simultaneous assay of Tinosorb®S (bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine) with three other sunscreen agents [benzophenone-3, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (avobenzone) and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate] in high protection sunscreen. Separations were performed on a RP-18 Nucleodur®Gravity®column (150 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) eluted with a ternary gradient mixture constituted of tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile and an aqueous solution of acetic acid. The quantitative analysis was achieved with internal calibration performed with octyl dimethyl para-aminobenzoate (PABA) at 330 nm. In accordance with the analytical references (SFSTP, ICH, ISO…), the accuracy of the method was evaluated using a statistical approach of the validation parameters (specificity, response function, linearity, precision and trueness). For each studied ultraviolet filter, an accuracy profile was determined on a predicted range. These profiles show a graphical representation of the recovery percentage and confidence limits centred on 100%. The method is validated and can be used for analysis in cosmetic sunscreen products.

ABSTRACT

Ciba® TINOSORB® S - The daily broad-spectrum UV absorber

TINOSORB® S

  • Oil soluble
  • Compatible with other UV filters
  • Synergy with UV-B filters
  • Stabilizes other UV filters
  • Photostable
  • introduces a new chemistry to the market of cosmetic UV absorbers. The extraordinary photostability of HydroxyPhenylTriazine (HPT) chemistry is due to the dissipation of harmful UV radiation into harmless heat.
  • was specifically designed to meet the needs of the cosmetic industry. Besides the excellent performance as a photostable broad-spectrum UV filter, it is compatible with organic and inorganic filters, meets the high safety requirements and is oil soluble for high water resistance.
  • is a daily broad-spectrum filter. It provides excellent UV-A protection to serve as a basis for UV protective day creams and shows synergistic effects with UV-B filters for high-SPF sunscreens.

Ciba® TINOSORB® UV Filters

Ciba® TINOSORB® UV Filters

Because UV protection shuld last for hours, TINOSORB® UV Filters were derived from a technology transfer from industries where photostability is a requirement.

Because a sunscreen should protect over the whole UV spectrum, TINOSORB® UV Filters offer broad-spectrum protection to protect efficientliy against both UVB and UVA rays.

TINOSORB® M
The first microfine, particulate organic UV filter

TINOSORB® M is a unique combination of features from organic chemistry and inorganic properties that enables protection the skin through absorption, scattering and reflection of UV radiation.

TINOSORB® S
The most efficient broad-spectrum UV filter

TINOSORB® S is a highly effective broadband UV filter that helps shield the skin from the UVA and UVB rays that do damage every day.
